What is a coral ?

  • Marine Organism (ANIMAL): Corals belong to the class Anthozoa and form large underwater structures called coral reefs. They are not plants because they don't produce their own food.

  • Built By Tiny Animals Called POLYPS: These tiny creatures called polyps secrete calcium carbonate, creating hard exoskeletons.

  • Heroes of the Sea: They provide essential habitats, support coastal protection, and are crucial for marine biodiversity.

  • Climate Change : Rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification are major threats to coral reefs. These changes can cause coral bleaching, where corals lose their vibrant colors and vital symbiotic algae, leading to reduced growth rates and increased mortality.

Threats that they face

  • Pollution: Runoff from land, including agricultural pesticides, industrial pollutants, and plastic waste, can harm coral reefs. Sedimentation from construction and deforestation can also smother corals and reduce the sunlight they need.

  • BIODIVERSITY : Coral reefs support approximately 25% of all marine species, making them one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth.

Why Save/Adopt corals ?

  • FISHERIES : Coral reefs provide critical habitats for many fish species, supporting commercial and subsistence fishing industries.

  • CARBON SINK : Coral reefs help sequester carbon, playing a role in mitigating climate change.

  • MEDICINEL RESOURCES : Coral reefs are a source of novel bioactive compounds used in pharmaceuticals for treating diseases like cancer and HIV.

  • CORAL CONSERVATION : Donations directly fund our cost to propagate them (Scuba tanks, tools, boat fees, equipment, etc...)

  • COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE : Healthy coral reefs play a role in carbon sequestration, so supporting their restoration helps in the fight against climate change.

  • PROMOTE AWARENESS : Adopting a coral often includes communicating with locals, raising awareness about the importance of coral reefs and the threats they face.
